Roulette:the zero pocketand why every bet is equal

How one extra pocket doubles the house margin, why every bet on the layout carries the same edge, and which rules change it.

Roulette is the most completely specified game in this section. The wheel, the layout and the payouts have barely changed in two centuries, which makes it easy to implement faithfully and almost impossible to make interesting.

One difference decides everything

The wheel carries the numbers 1 to 36 plus at least one zero, and the number of zeros is the whole story. A single-zero wheel has 37 pockets; a double-zero wheel has 38. The payouts are identical on both (a straight-up number pays 35 to 1 either way), which is precisely why the extra pocket matters.

Work it through on a straight-up bet. On 37 pockets the true odds are 36 to 1 against and the game pays 35 to 1, giving the house one unit in 37, about 2.7 per cent. On 38 pockets the true odds are 37 to 1 against and the game still pays 35 to 1, which doubles the margin to about 5.26 per cent. Nothing else about the game changed.

Why every bet on the layout has the same edge

This is the counter-intuitive part and it is worth stating carefully. Red or black, odd or even, a column, a dozen, a corner, a straight-up number: on a single-zero wheel every one of them carries the same 2.7 per cent, because every payout is calculated as though the zero were not there.

So the choice between bets is not a choice about margin. It is a choice about variance: an even-money bet wins often and small, a straight-up number wins rarely and large, and the expected result over a long run is identical. The one exception on a double-zero wheel is the five-number bet, which carries a worse edge than everything else on the same layout.

The variants

Beyond pocket count, the differences are rules that apply only when the ball lands on zero. One returns half an even-money stake; another leaves the stake in place for the next spin. Both cut the edge on even-money bets roughly in half without touching any other bet on the layout, which makes them the only rule variations in the game that change the arithmetic.

Why it resists redesign

The format has no state, no decisions during a round and no skill component, so there is nothing for a designer to work with except presentation. Implementations differ in camera, in table dressing and in how the result is revealed, and not at all in what is being played.

That is also why roulette appears in video games as a set piece, not as a system. A wheel is a good scene and a poor mechanic. Casino and table games holds the wider record.

The systems players keep inventing

Because the game has no state, betting patterns are the only thing a player can vary, and the patterns recur across two centuries of literature. Doubling after a loss, increasing by one unit after a loss and decreasing after a win, following a numeric sequence, and all of them reshape the distribution of outcomes and none of them touches the expectation, because the expectation is fixed per spin and the spins are independent.

What the patterns actually buy is a different shape of loss. Doubling after a loss produces many small wins and rare catastrophic ones; the reverse produces many small losses and rare large wins. Both average out to the same edge, and the reason the first feels like it works is that the catastrophic case is rare enough to be absent from most sessions.

The independence of spins is the part that makes all of this arithmetic, not opinion. A wheel has no memory, so a run of red changes nothing about the next spin, and the widespread intuition that it must is the clearest example in this section of a format being misread.
